Call waiting tone in Teams*

Call waiting tone in Teams*

( *or how do I stop Teams ringing in my ears when I am on a call )

Overview

If you are on a call, Teams by default will ring while you are on the phone, and is not the normal call-waiting tone of the previous phone system.

Microsoft Teams now has the ability to change the way calls queue when you are in a Teams call. This affects calls to your extension number, Teams calls to your name (i.e., they have typed your name in Teams), and a hunt group call if you are part of a hunt group.

You can now choose between

  • Play a busy signal - this now means callers get the ‘engaged tone’ when you are on a call

  • Let new calls ring me - this is the default and means calls will ring even if you are on the phone

  • Redirect as if call is unanswered - this is the recommended setting, this means if you are on a Teams call, calls to you directly will follow the next rule in the list (see pic below) ‘When you can't answer a call’ which by default will go to your voicemail. If you are part of a hunt group the hunt group call will go to the next available agent and if you are the only person in the hunt group the call will queue silently on your phone.

Configuration

To configure this setting while in Teams click on the three dots (…) in the top right hand corner of the app. Choose Settings then under the Settings menu on the left hand side choose Calls. In the middle of the app you now have a number of options (see pic below), The option you are looking for is ‘When you're in a call and receive another call’. Click on the drop-down box and choose your setting, there is no save button and it immediately takes effect.
