Endnote Style Manager
The Below notes offer some info and instructions of how to edit Endnote Styles and in this case related to a reference template this example shows how to ad a Vancouver reference DOI
Instructions Below including a ticket for reference
My colleagues at the IT Helpdesk have referred your query on using DOIs (ITS-362814) in your references using EndNote.
This is a little tricky because Vancouver references generally don’t have a DOI included in the style guide so these aren’t programmed into the EndNote styles (except electronic articles, online databases and webpages but these pull from the URL field in the EndNote reference record).
The second challenge is the DOIs aren’t usually prefaced with a https://doi.org/ , so they are not picked up and formatted as a link in Word.
This means you would need to tweak the EndNote style to include this. I’ve pasted a screenshot of what this looks like below but it would mean adding | `https://doi.org/ `DOI | to the bibliography template (not sure where you’d want it in the citation so I’ve added it at the end). What this code does is include the DOI in the reference, and prefaces it with the https://doi.org/ so it becomes a link.
I have attached the referencing style here if you would like to use it and tweak it further – I have only done this for the Journal Article template so, if you would like to add it to more referencing types, you can do the same for these. I have also included below instructions on editing referencing styles.
Open the attached file while you have EndNote open, click File and Save As to save it to your EndNote reference styles. You can also save any subsequent changes you make to the style. You will need to set this as your referencing style in Word.
Editing reference styles
You may wish to edit one of the standard EndNote referencing styles in order to meet, for example, a journal publisher’s requirements.
To edit a style:
In EndNote, go to the Tools menu.
Go to Output Styles and select Open Style Manager.
Locate the style you wish to edit and click to highlight it.
Click on the Edit button.
Select the part of the style you wish to edit from the menu on the left, such as:
Citations
Bibliography
Journal names
Edit as necessary in the right hand pane.
Close the style and you will be prompted to save it. You are advised to save a copy with a different title so you retain the original styles.
Editing the format of the bibliography or reference list
To make amendments to the appearance of references in a reference list or bibliography, click on Templates in the left hand pane beneath the heading Bibliography. Amendments can be made directly to the template in the right hand pane.
There are different templates for different reference types. Where a reference type is not listed, the reference uses the Generic template.
You can highlight a field and change the formatting, for example to bold or italic, using the icons at the top of the screen.
To add additional fields to a reference template:
Click in the template text where you want the new field to go.
Click on the Insert Field button and select the field that you wish to insert. It will appear in the template.
You can also copy and paste the required code (e.g | `https://doi.org/ `DOI |).
If you are using an Author/date style, you may wish to change the way authors' names are displayed using the options in the left hand pane under Bibliography:
Author lists: Change the number of authors that are displayed before abbreviating with et al.
Author name: Change capitalisation and display of initials or full first names. Use the buttons at the top of the pane to select bold, italic or underlined text.
On a Mac there are no buttons to edit the text. Go to the Edit menu at the top of the screen and use the Font options to edit the text.
