Help with MFA (multifactor authentication)

I don't have my mobile device with me

If you never added an alternative verification method you’ll need to contact the IT Helpdesk.

If you added an alternative verification method:

  1. Sign in to your account but select the Sign in another way link. If you don't see the Sign in another way link, it means that you haven't set up any other verification methods.

My device was lost or stolen

If you've lost or had your mobile device stolen, you can take either of the following actions:

  • Sign in using a different method.

  • Contact the IT Helpdsesk - we can clear your settings so you can set up a new device.

I have received a sign-in request that wasn't me, what should I do?

If you receive a sign-in request that wasn't you, please contact the IT Helpdesk immediately.

I have a new phone and I want to add it

You'll need to set up MFA each time you get a new device. The quickest way to do this is to:

  1. Go to https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info and sign in with your Essex email address and password.

  2. Choose Add method and then follow the instructions onscreen to add a new device.

  3. Once you've added your new device, Delete the old device from your list of methods.

Can I opt-out of MFA?

No, MFA is mandatory for all University students and staff.

What’s the best sign-in method?

We recommend using the Microsoft Authenticator app for the best experience, it’s also the most secure.

Will I be charged for receiving verification text or calls?

No, you will not be charged for receiving verification text or calls if you choose this method.
