It is possible to set up class tests within Moodle that can be linked to an activity, much like a centrally managed exam. These activities can be automatically managed by Moodle which will set up individual needs timings, room restrictions, etc.

Instructions

  1. Navigate to the course in Moodle

  2. Select “More” → “Exams and Tests”

  3. Select the “Adhoc test” button

Field

Description

Name

Enter a name for the test here, this can be anything you want but should be descriptive as it’s shown to students and used as the activity name.

Start time

Enter the start time for the test. Moodle will allow candidates to start the exam up to five minutes early, to account for differences in displayed clock times.

Duration

Enter the amount of time students should have to complete the test by default. Where students are entitled to extra writing and/or non-writing time, Moodle will use this value to calculate the amount of extra time they’re allowed and add this to their time automatically.

Location

Whether the test takes place on-campus, or is remote. On-campus exams use the Safe Exam Browser, whereas remote exams don’t.

Rooms

If the exam is on-campus, you may optionally choose a list of rooms the candidates should be in. This only supports a subset of IT and computing labs.

  1. Choose a source for the test’s candidates or participants.

titleChoose from role (recommended)

The recommended way to schedule a class test is to use the “Choose from role” option, and by selecting the “Student” checkbox. Any user enrolled as a student on the course will be automatically added to the test.

Expand
titleChoose from cohort

Use this option if all your test candidates are in the same email group. Moodle will automatically enrol them if they don’t already have access to the course.

Expand
titleChoose from file

Use this option if you have a text file or spreadsheet containing identifiers for the users who will be taking the test. These identifiers can either be an email address, username, registration number, or PRID.

You can provide either a spreadsheet saved as a .csv or a plain text file. A text file must have one identifier only on each line.

A spreadsheet may contain multiple columns, Moodle will look at each column from left to right to try and match a single user per row.

Expand
titleChoose manually

Use this option if you’re scheduling a test for a small number of students. Use the search box to find any user by name, username, or email address.

Only add new candidates?

Some choices have a “Only add new candidates” checkbox. Leaving this option checked means if a candidate is removed from the selected cohort, or loses their role in the course, that they won’t be automatically removed from the exam

Non-writing/rest time

Some students are entitled to non-writing or rest time during exams or tests.

It’s not currently possible to pause an attempt within Moodle, so instead we add the student’s non-writing time to their quiz or assignment timer.

You may wish to enforce that students don’t continue with their attempts during their rest time. Once the test is created the exam students report can be configured to show you students with non-writing time. It will need to be someone’s responsibility during the test to keep track of (un)used non-writing time, potentially ending a student’s quiz before their timer reaches zero.

It’s not currently possible to remotely end a quiz attempt.

Troubleshooting

I don’t have access to the Exams and Tests page

You’ll need to have permission to edit a course to be able to create an adhoc test. Get in touch with the module supervisor or departmental admin team to get access.

It may take a minute or two for the exam students report to update.

It can take up to half an hour for exam students to be enrolled on courses.

Ensure that you’ve configured the test’s candidate options, verifying that:

  • Any cohort/email group you’ve selected includes users

  • The course has enrolled participants with the role(s) you’ve selected

  • You’ve chosen one or more user manually

  • The file you uploaded contains valid user identifiers
